Email width: the 600-pixel width rule

Before mobile devices appeared, email was a tool that was accessed from the computer, which dictated best practices. Computer screens were low resolution. It was at this time that the idea that an email should not be more than 600 pixels wide was born.

And why that number?

That was the size used by email providers like Hotmail, Yahoo!, and Outlook, the most common at the time. To get idea, Gmail did not exist yet. So the developers had to choose a width that would fit all existing low-resolution screen sizes, and the size was eventually adopted so that emails could be read without scrolling.

But if today the available formats of mobile devices are so much more varied and there are larger and higher quality screens, why is there still so much talk about the 600-pixel width rule?

It is that the rule continues to serve Marketing professionals to ensure that the email is fully displayed. If you use Outlook in the three-column model, for example, the message display area is still very small.

Is there a standard email width?

Currently, there are no universal standards governing ideal email sizes. But there are already sensitive emails, which adapt to different screens.

Most companies send emails that are between 600 and 700 pixels wide, but some also experiment with wider formats.

Weight of the images

The size accepted by email providers is small: 100kbs per individual image and, adding all the images present in the email, 500kbs. So if you send out a long newsletter, for example, it's likely to end up in spamTherefore, it is important to put a few images and reduce their size.

If you break these rules, you are likely to have problems with your email delivery rates.

subject size

When we talk about the size of Email Marketing, we also need to talk about the issue.

Ideally, according to studies, the subject should have between 20 and 60 characters. If they are longer than that, they will be cut off on mobile views and are unlikely to stand out among the crowd of other emails in the recipient's inbox.

Caring about the size of your issues is one way to ensure they are delivered to users. See some examples in the RD Station emails:

Preheader Size

The pre-header is the first sentence to the right of the email subject line. You can include it in some email providers, like Gmail, for example.

The size of the pre-header will depend on the size of the subject. The longer the subject, the smaller the preheader should be, and vice versa. With test sends you can preview how your pre-header would look like on various devices. See more examples:

Worrying about the size of emails is one way to ensure that they are delivered to users.

But, although it is a very important point, it is not the only one.
